Thyroid Disorders

The Thyroid gland secretes Thyroxine/Tetraiodothyronine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3) hormones that regulate the metabolism rate of the body and brain function and promotes the development and growth of the body. There are majorly two disorders depending on the amount of hormone secretion.

The types of Thyroid Disorders

1) Hypothyroidism

2) Hyperthyroidism

Hypothyroidism :

When the secretion of the thyroid hormones is lower or the thyroid gland is underactive, the condition is Hypothyroidism. A person experiences fatigue, weight gain, muscle weakness, constipation, etc.

Hyperthyroidism :

The thyroid gland becomes overactive and produces thyroid hormones in excess. The symptoms of Hyperthyroidism are rapid heart rate, increased appetite, weight loss, sweating, etc. Hyperthyroidism is caused due to various factors like excessive iodine intake, thyroid gland inflammation, Grave’s disease, etc., while Hashimoto’s disease, iodine deficiency, and pituitary disorder cause Hypothyroidism. Endocrinologist, the specialist, will suggest the treatment for thyroid disorders after diagnosis of the issue through blood tests. The treatments, along with a balanced diet with appropriate nutrients, manage the levels of T3 and T4 hormones within the normal range and facilitate normal functioning of the Thyroid gland.
